In Guantian, Tainan, farmers often piled up water caltrop shells along the field ridges after the autumn and winter harvest. In the early days, without the environmental awareness, those wasted shells were often secretly burned, producing thick smoke that damaged the air and soil year after year. So far, those wasted black water caltrop shells had disappeared from the field ridges since they had become charcoals, the famous "Black Gold," a biochar that can purify air and improve soils. The change is a mutually beneficial experiment combining local wisdom with the circular economy.

Cooperative Economy
Taiwu Township in Pingtung County has the widest fields of wild coffee trees in Taiwan, building a fair trade and mutual benefit platform through the "Cooperatives." The model allows indigenous coffee smallholders (farmers) to earn reasonable incomes, steady local employment, and economic development. It further integrates the tribe culture into the coffee industry to develop tourism and create a common good and prosperity for the whole township.
